What are Midges?
Biting midges (commonly called sand flies) are from the family of insects known as Culiocoides.
Biting midges are insects that breed in wet soils in the tidal zones such as mangrove mud and sandy shores they are prevalent in many canal homes in the Gold Coast and homes backing onto nature reserves and parks.
Biting Midges are renowned for their nuisance. They often rest and breed amongst associated habitats such as coastal lagoons, estuaries, mangrove swamps and tidal flats. The Biting Midges activity is similar to that of mosquitoes, in that they most commonly bite around dusk and dawn, and are relatively inactive in windy conditions. Biting Midges will usually only disperse short distances from their breeding sites. Blood meals are only sought by females in preparation to lay eggs, however, both males and females will feed on vegetable fluids and nectar. Female midges may attack humans in large numbers, biting on any areas of exposed skin, and often on the face, scalp and hands. Some species will blood feed on a wide range of animal hosts.
Biting Midges are not known to transmit any diseases, however, people may have varying reactions to their bites.

Useful tips from Midge and Mosquito Bites.
Peoples reaction to bites varies from slight redness which goes away in an hour or less, to very severe inflammation and reactions. If you react rapidly and the swellings are small, you are reasonably immune so treatment may not be needed. Swelling and itching will soon leave.
For the less severe cases of bites, the following tips may help negate the effects of bites:
• a hot bath may provide temporary relief • anti-itching creams or lotions bought over the counter are quite effective; do not apply them when the skin is broken • some insect repellents also give relief to the bite, providing the individual's skin is not sensitive to the repellent
• it has been observed that Vitamin B1 (Thiamine Hydrochloride), taken over a time of more than 30 days before exposure to midges, may reduce the degree of some people's reaction to bites (this is not true of everyone and always consult your doctor before taking any vitamins).
But, if you react hours or days later to a bite, whether you felt it or not, your immunity is poor and you are likely to be more severely affected. If your reaction is very severe, see your doctor.

How to Protect Yourself from Midges and mosquitoes biting You.

Avoid gardens at Dusk or Early Mornings.
Avoid Gardening and watering your gardens early morning and late evenings
Burning mosquito coils and citronella oil may help reduce midge numbers and deter mosquitoes.
Many insect repellents with DEET are effective against midges and should be used whenever you are outside the house. A home recipe of an equal part mixture of baby oil, Dettol and Eucalyptus oil is used by some people.
Long sleeve shirt and pants and hats give some protection against these biting terrors.
